My Introduction to Environmental Engineering

During the fall of my sophomore year of high school, I started researching how to learn about environmental engineering. I came across Columbia University’s High School Immersion Programs and found the Cities and Climate Change course. I was successful in my application to participate in this ten-week program during the spring of 2021.

Each week we learned a new topic, including energy sources, green buildings, land conservation, environmental justice, adapting to rising seas, and urban ecological design.

Towards the end of the program, my class was directed to do a case study on a redevelopment project. I decided to do mine on the Barangaroo Reserve, which is a waterfront redevelopment in Sydney Harbor, Australia.

Taking this course reinforced my interest in environmental-related topics and I started to consider it as a potential avenue for college studies.
